Hi Everyone! Today I am sharing with you a guest post from freelance writer Kathleen Crane.
When making a move, it is very easy to lose your cool. It is an overwhelming task that not only takes time, but also drains your wallet. Before you start packing, make sure to consider the following tips. They may help you to save money when moving.
1. Move Yourself
The most inexpensive way to move is to do it yourself. This means packing and shipping by yourself. While you may be tempted to use a moving company, you are not recommended to if you want to save money. Be it as it may, sometimes you can’t help using professional services. Either because your stuff is too much or because you are moving to another city or country for that matter. It is wise to consider doing all the work by yourself when you are moving across town or when you have only a few possessions and nothing as big as a piano. A better way to go is to hire a moving truck and do all the work yourself. It will be less expensive than hiring someone to get the job done.
Whatever you choose to do, always remember to have a plan and stick to it. A well-carried-out plan will help you steer clear of trouble and complications.
And here is a quick tip: if you decide to opt for a moving truck, take the time to move the largest items first. When you are done, return the truck and use your car to move the rest of the stuff. You’ll save quite a chunk of money that way.
2. Dispose of Excess Stuff
Rather than paying more for transporting excess items that you may never need again, get rid of anything that is no longer in use. You will save time and money on packing and transporting. Make sure to have a look at all your items, be it clothing, accessories, bedding, kitchen tools, appliances, gadgets and so on and so forth. Ask yourself how many times you have used these items for the past few weeks and whether you can go without any of them. The more items you dispose of, the better. What you do with the possessions you don’t need, it is up to you. You can sell some of them and get more money for your house move.
If you go with professional movers, this step is essential. As you know, they usually charge by distance and weight. Thus, the less stuff you have, the smaller the vehicle you are going to need. Therefore, you will end up paying less.
3. Plan, Plan, Plan
The safest way to go is to plan. The more detailed the plan, the better. When making a plan consider these.
Time: Moving during peak season is not recommended from Kilburn movers. More often than not, June and July are the busy months. So, you need to steer clear of that time of year. The best time to move (if using professional movers) is winter. If you can, schedule your move around that time of year.
Negotiate: If you are using professional movers, call them in advance, give them all the details they need and try to negotiate the best price. If you let them ship your stuff on their schedule, you will end up paying less because most companies offer discounts for flexible deliveries. In that sense, you might want to move mid-week because there is lots of demand for moving services during weekends for obvious reasons and the price is twice as high.
Take into consideration all these steps before you start your move in order to save money. You will be surprised by the outcome. And be patient. Moving takes time. The more relaxed you are, the better.
