A few days ago I took Aldi up on its truth #38: We always offer the finest cuts. And that goes for our prices, too. I compared Aldi to BJs Wholesale Club meats here. BJs had the cheaper prices.
Now I am comparing Aldi to Walmart prices. The cheaper price will be in red.
This was against their own brand meat.
*Note that these are not sale prices. So if one of these meats goes on sale then obviously it may be cheaper. These are the every day prices.
Fresh USDA Choice Ribeye Steak
ALDI- $9.99/lb Walmart-$10.97/lb
Fresh USDA Choice Beef Stew Meat
ALDI- $4.99/lb Walmart- $5.98/lb
Fresh 80% Lean Ground Beef
ALDI- $3.89/lb Walmart-$3.86/lb
Fresh Chicken Tenderloins
ALDI-$2.99/lb Walmart- $3.98/lb
Fresh USDA Choice Bottom Round Roast
ALDI-$4.89/lb. Walmart- $5.99/lb.
Fresh USDA Choice Chuck Roast
ALDI-$4.89/lb. Walmart-$5.96/lb.
Fresh Chicken Breasts
ALDI-$2.79/lb. Walmart $1.99/lb.
Fresh Boneless Center Cut Pork chops
ALDI-$4.19/lb. Walmart-$6.52/lb.
Fresh Pork Tenderloin
ALDI-$3.99/lb. Walmart-$4.38/lb.
And the Winner is…..
ALDI!!
I was a bit surprised that Walmart was over $0.40 more on a lot of the items. Now if you didn’t get the USDA Choice the meat would be cheaper. So in this case if you do not have a BJs membership you are better off going to Aldi.
IHere’s a little diagram and an article about meat consumption. Saying we eat an average 102.5/lbs of meat in one year!? WHOA… When you read further down in the article it shows in 2012 we dipped a bit. But let’s go with this number.
You have 5 people in your family.
That’s 512.5/lbs of meat in one year. Just about one whole cow right?!
Ok so let’s say your family is consuming 512.5 lbs. of meat in a year. Aldi is an average $0.78/lb. cheaper for all meats than the advertised price currently at Walmart.
By buying your meat from Aldi you would save your family $399 a year!
